I hope you guys enjoy this, or at least like it enough to want to read more.  Constructive criticism always welcome.

Prologue: Restless Night

ÂHe sat with his back to the Twinkle Tree in West Sarutabaruta at the top of Starfall Hillock smoking a pipe he had crafted himself.  Night was about to fall on the peaceful savanna.  He watched as Yagudo Scribes, Acolytes, and Initiates passed by.  They had learned long ago that disturbing him was a bad idea.  Every now and then he would have to remind them, but the message was always relearned fairly quickly.  He sat there and watched as adventurers ran past him towards the outpost.  Sometimes a Beastman was following them, sometimes not.  Most of the time when a Yagudo or Goblin was chasing them the adventurer didn't make it.  He would slowly get up when that happened and use his magic to raise them, unless they decided to go home the quick way.  It made no difference to him.  He would just sit down again and continue to smoke his pipe.
It had been 15 years since he had last been to his home, and it was good to be back.  He was done advneturing and looking forward to settling down, starting a store, maybe even starting a family.  A particular Mithra had caught his eye and his fancy one night at the Timbre Timbers Tavern.  He had gone in there for a quick bite to eat and a drink when she came strolling in.  Her tail swishing back and forth accentuating her hips which also swished back and forth with the way she walked.  He could tell by her dress that she too was an adventurer and after asking around to the regulars found out that her name was Chiopba.Â
There he sat, with his back to the Twinkle Tree when a scream erupted from somewhere to the west.  His turned his head quickly that way.  His mouth slowly opened, his pipe falling to the ground as he saw every adventurer that had been west of the outpost running east to Windurst.  He slowly rose and from his high vantage point saw what had them all running.  It seemed like every Yagudo from Giddeus was on their way to Windurst.
He heard a scream from the southwest.  He looked that way and broke into a run.  He was just about to clear the cliffs on his right when he saw a mass of adventurers being pursued by a large force of Cardians.  He saw four adventurers as skilled as he was protecting the backs of those fleeing the Cardians from the southwest and three protecting the retreat from the west.  He drew his sword from its scabbard.  It had been a gift from a friend, and it had never failed him before.  He calmly made his way through the retreating mob and picked his place to make his stand.  He saw Chiopba running and grabbed her arm.  "I'll need your help, I promise you, no blade will touch you."  Together they stood and fought, giving ground reluctantly and at a much slower pace then the retreating adventurers.  They were the last two to pass through the gate into Windurst Waters.Â
"What the hell was that?" asked one of the adventurers.
"By the gods," said another.  "The same thing just happened in Ronfaure, and in Gustaburg."
    "What's going on?"
He searched his pockets for his pipe until he remebered that he dropped it by the Twinkle Tree on Starfall Hillock.  "Anyone have a pipe, or a piece of ashwood?"  He hung his head a little when he saw the answer was no.  He sat there right next to the gate, breathing hard from the many wounds he had over his body, Chiopba administering her healing magics on him.Â
"Can someone answer my question?  What's going on?  Why did all the Beastmen attack?"
He looked down at the ground in front of him.  The chill of being magically healed always wore him out a little.  Finally he looked up, the other three that had protected the retreating adventurers looked back at him with knowing looks in their eyes.  He sighed, "I think... War has returned to Vana'diel."

Not that long awaited, but hopefully looked for.  Constructive Criticism as always welcome.

Chapter 1: Windurst

ÂNestled snugly on the southern coast of the continent lies Sarutabaruta.  A land that is ever warm with large palm like trees that sway back and forth in the breezes that cross the plain.  For the most part a peaceful land where the different tribes of Beastmen had come to an understanding among themselves.  The Goblins had their lands, the Yagudo their own.  The Goblins inhabited the towers in the west and east of the land.  The Yagudo had carved their home from the cliffs in the far west of Sarutabaruta in a home they called Giddeus.
A warren of caves and secret passages that was created with the purpose of war in mind.  Giddeus was a fortress without the look of one.  Winding paths and unseen holes made attacking the home of the Yagudo next to impossible.  The Goblins had tried unsuccessfully numerous times before the two races eventually struck a truce.  This was before the arrival of others.
They had come from across the seas, little creatures who were looking for a new home.  They looked like easy prey to the Yagudo and Goblins when the first settlers had landed on the southern shore of Sarutabaruta.  These little creatures, though, hid untold power.  They struck at the Beastmen with magics that burnt flesh, they healed themselves with different spells.  They were the Tarutaru and they were here to stay.
The little ones built a walled town for themselves as protection against the advance of Beastmen.  Knowing that they could not fight the beasts forever they were quick to strike a truce with the Yagudo.  The Tarutaru would pay them a tribute and the Yagudo would not attack the new settlement.
The Goblins knew they could never attack these little creatures with a treaty like this in place and for the most part left them alone.  There were raids but very few on both sides ever died.  The raids were for the most part a way for the Goblins to remind the Tarutaru they were there.  This was the birth of Windurst.Â
Eventually, when the population grew and the town spread outward, a leader emerged.  One to guide the people of Windurst in a direction.  She was the first Star Sybil.  It was during her reign that the Mithra came from across the ocean and settled in Sarutabaruta.  Three Star Sybils had come and gone when the Beastmen War broke out.Â
The fifth Star Sybil was in her office at the top of Heaven's Tower when scattered reports came in from across Vana'diel of the attacks.  She immediately contacted the President of Bastok and the King of San d'Oria.  She locked herself in her office for a week.
The people of Windurst were not idle during that time.  Nor was Dylan.  He looked idle sitting in front of the Mog Houses smoking the new pipe he had just made after the first attack.  Chiopba and a few adventurers sat with him in a small circle.  They were looking at a map of Sarutabaruta and Windurst when a young Tarutaru adventurer came up from behind.
"What are you doing?" asked the adventurer.
Dylan looked him up and down weighing him with his eyes.  He was a mere boy that looked to be almost playing at adventuring.  Dylan, though, sensed a keen intellect and a bright mind under those baggy clothes.  "I am attempting to determine where the Beastmen and Cardians will strike Windurst first."
    "Why?"
Dylan smiled, "the first rule of war, boy, is to know thy enemy.  I thought I did know them.  They left me alone I would leave them alone, for the most part anyway.  It was an unspoken trust we had, now, this is a bold move for them.  Too bold.  I think they will try and strike at our heart.  I just don't know how they are going to get there."
"What do you mean?" asked one of the other advneturers sitting around the map.
"I think they plan on attacking Heaven's Tower."
"How can they do that?  There's no outside connection to Heaven's Tower.  You have to go through either Waters or Woods and even then it's a long run."Â
"Here's the plan I have so far.  We're going to need help, and it's going to be tough, but I think we can do it."  Dylan paused to finalize the plan in his own mind before telling the rest.  It was a simple plan, and one that they would surely need help with.  Dylan only forgot one thing in his plan, Toraimarai Canal.
  Â

Constructive criticism welcome.  Hope you enjoy as much as the others.

Chapter 2: San d'Oria

ÂFound to the north in a deep, dark pine wood lies Ronfaure.  A peaceful land that was dominated by the Orcs and their citadel, K'thal, named for their first warchief.  The Orcs destroyed any who tried to settle the land, whether it was the Quadav, the Yagudo, or the Goblins.  It was their land before it was anyone elses and they ruled the land with iron fists.  They killed what they wanted to kill, ate what they wanted to eat, and drank what they wanted to drink.Â
The Goblins were always a thorn in the side of the Orcs.  They never outright attacked but would raid the Orcish foodstuffs and steal their gold.  The Orcs thought of them as weak, too weak to pose any real threat.  Then the Yagudo came to Ronfaure.  The battles with these Beastmen ripped trees out by the roots, and made the rivers turn red with blood.  It took the Orcs a long time to rebuild the land the way they wanted.  Just in time for the Quadav to come and for the battles to begin anew.  This time, in addition to the destruction of the land, the Quadav tore down K'thal.Â
It was about this time that the first of the Elvaan made their way to Ronfaure.  The land was ravaged by the wars with the Yagudo and the Quadav, but the Elvaan saw potential.  They were a natural people, in tune with their own surroundings.  The arrogance that would later become their distinguishing trait showed very little.  They saw what Ronfaure had been before the battles, and what it could be with the proper care.  They built for themselves an outpost called Ghelsba.  Everything they needed to sustain their way of life was provided by Ronfaure.  Fresh drinking water, unspoiled by war, was found in the higher reaches of the mountains.  Trees from the war with the Quadav lay already on the ground.  Even metal ore could be mined in the cave system that wound through the mountains.
Ghelsba was built with stockades and with leather huts for the Elvaan to live.  They faced numerous battles with the Orcs, not always winning but weakening the foundation of the Orc's power.  With more Elvaan coming to Ronfaure every day the Elvaan presence in Ronfaure grew stronger.  It was then that the king decided to make for himself a home.  He commisioned a large stonework construction that was to be both town and fortress for his people.  This was San d'Oria.
The history of his people flashed through Robspert's mind as he crouched outside a leather hut high up the mountain in Ghelsba.  He could hear the guttural speech of the Orcs inside the crude building.  He hesitated to touch the outer skin of the dwelling, not because he might be seen from the inside but because of the Orcish filth that covered it.  He was here along with the four members of his party because of all the adventurers in San d'Oria they could speak and understand Orcish.  It was an ugly language with many clicks and grunts, and one Robspert hated listening to.Â
"We must attack when the Yagudo and Quadav attack," exclaimed one of the Orcs inside.  "Only then can we make sure that we will catch these adventurers by surprise.  He promised us it would work, He said it would work."
"Yes," stated another.  "It will work, but where should we strike?"
"The castle," said a third.  "What the hell do they call that building?  Chateau d'Oraguille?"
Robspert sneered at the mispronunciation of the name of the castle.  He wanted to scream at the Orc inside.  He looked to the other three all at their lookout positions and nodded.  They were almost done here.  Just one more piece of information was needed.Â
"Ah, the secret tunnel you speak of," said the wisened voice of another.  He seemed to be the leader of this group.  "The perfect plan I have.  Attack the walls with the main force we will, while a smaller force will kidnap the princess, hehe.  Perfect, don't you agree?"
All present assented to the plan and that was enough for Robspert he nodded again and the four used their silent oils and their prism powders and stole away.  Robspert had gotten the information he needed to protect his princess and his home.  He never gave thought to the "He" they mentioned.

By popular demand (at least from some of you) here's the next chapter.  Constructive criticsim welcome, as well as questions, comments and anything else you can think of.

Chapter 3: Bastok

ÂOnce a lush tropical forest Gustaburg was the home of the Quadav.  They shared the land, peacefully, with the Goblins, Moblins and Bugbears.  Until the Moblins enslaved the Bugbears.  A race they once treated as equals they now treated as nothing more then property.  They used the Bugbears not only for manual labor but also as fodder for their wars.  The Moblins had taken control of both Palborough Mines and also Gusgen Mines.  To the south of Gusgen Mines the Bugbears built for the Moblins the Movalpolos.      The Moblins eventually attacked the Goblins and the Quadav with the same purpose they had with the Bugbears.  The Quadav and Goblins stood together and fought back the advance of the Moblins and their slaves.  The Moblins lost both Palborough and Gusgen Mines, but were able to hold back the onslaught of the Quadav and Goblins at Oldton Movalpolos.Â
Around the end of the war Hume's started coming to Gustaburg from across the seas.  They quickly built their city out of the side of a mountain range.  Using the natural valley in the middle to build the city of Bastok and the mountains as their walls.  The land was ravaged from the wars between the Moblins and Quadav but would have healed itself if not for the humes that settled there.  They dug mine shafts and mines all through Gustaberg.  The eventual waste of these mines impeded the regrowth of the region.  Galka showed up some time later to make their own fortunes in Bastok.
During the night the Quadav attacked the adventurers in both the North and South of Gustaberg scattering the people in all directions, many being seperated from the rest of their party.  Bastok, however, was not caught unawares by the attacks.  The elected President immediately put forth the Bastokan contigency plan.  During the time the humes were building their mines they created a canal between Palborough and Zeruhn Mines that allowed for the ore to be transported rapidly to the economic and industrial centers of Bastok.  The people knew that if there was ever an attack on the city by the Beastmen that canal would have to be caved in.Â
The President sent out his advanced forces to collapse the canal and seal off the connection between Palborough and Bastok.  The group was lead by Viesmann.  A general with an enourmous reputation for being able to win the battle no matter the odds.  He had with him a small force of six including himself.  They split into three groups of two adventurers each.  An hume and a galka per group.  They were each to take a seperate route getting to the canal.  Once there they were to ride the boat back collapsing the tunnel and destroying the skiffs as they went.Â
They left Bastok as a party of six.  When they returned only two remained, Viesmann was one of them.  They came back to Bastok in the dead of night, only government officials having known they even left.  They were debriefed in the middle of the night by the President himself.  The Quadav had suspected this move from the Bastokans and were ready for the party.  Viesmann and his partner were able to make it through, but unable to completely block off the canal.Â
"They were waiting for us, sir," said Viesmann.
The President looked confused.  "How could they have known?  This plan has been labeled classified since the digging of the canal."
"Of that," a hopeful look crossed the President's face as Viesmann said this.  "I'm not certain.  I heard mention of someone commanding them, someone other then their own leader.  This figure is apparently coordinating all of the Beastmen's movements over the whole of Vana'diel.  However, they never made mention of his name."
  Â
Deep in Palborough Mines, in the rookery of the Quadav Ni'Ghu Nestfinder sat in front of the eggs the females had just laid.  On the ground in front of him lay a pearl.  This pearl was much more then a beautiful gemstone.  It linked Ni'Ghu with the rest of the leaders of the Beastmen and the one who was leading all of them.  As much as he hated the other races of Beastmen, but he hated the races of Hume, Elvaan, Tarutaru, Mithra and Galka more.  The pearl blinked in time with the sound of the voice coming from it.
"Follow this plan and Bastok, San d'Oria and Windurst will fall before you like a house of cards.  I will keep the forces of Jeuno away occupied while you launch the attacks.  The age of the Beastmen is near at hand, the time of Beastman rule is soon upon us."  The plan finalized with an manaical laugh that had the light from the pearl throwing dancing shadows all over the rookery.  Ni'Ghu smiled as much as his beak would let him.  It was flawless, nothing could stop them, and when it was all done, when the cities of Bastok, San d'Oria and Windurst fell.  When the beastmen ruled all of Vana'diel, Ni'Ghu Nestfinder would rule all of the beastmen.  He broke into laughter along with the rest of the beastmen and their new leader.

Quick reply to the question of where everyone came from. I'm not giving that much thought to it at this point. Like most stories some of the ancient history and prehistory (as in life) becomes forgotten at some point only to be rediscovered at a later date. Not saying that this is going to happen in this story also not saying that I'm going to write the prehistory. As for any inconsistencies (sp?) this is a pure work of fiction. Any use of story elements that were actually set down by SE are unintentional for the most part. I take any and all blame for stuff that you don't like that I have added or subtracted. This is all a work in progress (I don't really have too much of a plan just writing off the cuff) and if I'm entertaining the people at this point, well that's all I'm really after (just wait til I get to the battles). I thank you all for taking the time out of your busy days to read my work, and thank you all for your wonderful comments. I appreciate it and in some respects it helps me to keep this post active. It would be very easy for me to say I'm too tired and not do a post, knowing that there are people out there who want to read it, and who are actually enjoying it, does wonders for my psyche and my ego (I know, I know, now that I've said that Ema's gonna have to try and stomp it down). I said this to Libri (I think, sorry been waking up at 5am since Sunday and everything is kinda hazy to me) if you think this stuff is good, and engaging you should read the novel I'm working on (that's not an offer, just an observation). Again, thank you all for helping me to keep this going and thank you for your kind words and interest. Have fun and don't die too much Peace Outpost D PS CHAPTER 4 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As promised...  Again, constructive criticism welcome, and feel free to PM me if you have any questions, comments or editorial stuff you want me to take a look at.  Thank you for your patience.

Chapter 4: The Prelate

On the top level of Castle Oztroja sits the conference room for the Yagudo Prelate.  A large, many columned room that houses a select group of Yagudo that make up the ruling body of the theocracy.  Appointed the position by the ruling Yagudo Pope this body of religious and government leaders make all the laws governing Yagudo life.  The original use of the room was not known.  It had a broken rock throne that dominated the room as well as thirteen small stone stools arranged in a semicircle facing the throne, six in the front row and seven in the back.  It had been easy for the Yagudo to convert the room to its present purpose.Â
Plans were being finalized for the Beastmen Meeting set to take place just outside of Jeuno in Rolanberry Fields.  The Yagudo Pope sat on his throne.  "My brethren, we have gathered today to determine which of us will attend the meeting of Beastmen in Rolanberry.  I have made my nomination, all those in favor?"  A small number of claws went up.  "All those opposed?"  The rest of the congregation raised their claws.  Has a second been proposed?Â
The Pope's choice sat to his immediate right.  Quu Domi the Gallant hung his head, he had hoped to go.  He had been briefed on the plan of action by the Pope personally.  The Yagudo were going to take over Windurst and all the lands surrounding it and shut every other Beastman out.  This was all to be kept very quiet, not even the other Prelates knew of this plan.Â
Huu Xalmo the Savage stood up from his stool.  "It has been discussed, your emminence.  The majority of the Prelates have selected as their chosen representative Tzee Xicu the Manifest."  All this talk was necessary.  It was the only real way to come to a decision.  It was said among the other Beastmen that the Yagudo wouldn't lift a talon to help their own brother unless it was discussed and agreed upon by a commitee.  While slower, it was really the only way to be sure of what should be done.Â
The Pope rose from his throne and called for the vote again.  This time the overwhelming majority of claws went into the air.  "So it has been decided, so shall it be."  The Pope bowed once to every direction, North, South, West and finally East.  This was the signal for a dismissal of the Prelate.  The others left the room, the Pope and Quu Domi sat in silence for a short time.
"Where did it all go wrong, your emminence?" asked Quu.  The Pope smiled widely.  "You knew this was going to happen, sir?"
"I had a feeling it would.  I've tried to plan for every eventuality."  The Pope saw the look of hurt on the face of his most trusted advisor.  "Dear Quu, do not be hurt by this.  I need you here my boy, so very few I can trust, I need to gather those whom I can.  I know in time you will understand.  Come, now, we have much to discuss."
They both rose from their seats and walked towards the Pope's private chambers.  Hidden behind one of the many columns in the room stood Huu Xalmo the Savage.  He needed to know what the Pope was planning, even more so he needed to know when the attack was going to happen.  These vital pieces of information were being kept very secret.  Not just secret to those outside the Prelate, but the Prelate itself.  Huu's Windurst agent was not going to be happy to hear any of this.  Huu still wondered why the Windurstian had insisted that Tzee Xicu the Manifest be present at the Meeting of Beastmen.

"Just an observation" Darrius? Hmm, very intriguing. ;) Just one thing in Chapter 4- second paragraph. You should take "Smaller stone stools sat in a semicircle around the massive chair " out, since you already explained that about 3 sentences ago ^_^ (Or you can replace it with something like "The Prelate sat across from him.")

Unfortunately ladies and gentlemen, I must take a couple of days off from this story.  I don't want to say too much, but some big stuff is going to happen and I just don't have the time or the energy right now to do it justice.  Also I am going away tomorrow for most of the day and so will not be able to update the story.  I apologize for the inconvenience and hope that you all understand.  Thank you again for helping to keep me going on this, and again I apologize to all of you who were looking forward to the next chapter of the story.Â
Have fun and don't die too much
Peace Outpost
D

PS  when you read the next chapter you will understand (at least I hope you will).
